2010 Milestones
Environmental Education
- Taught weekly classes on permaculture and conservation methods while building a plant nursery on the grounds of Lamon Satong Middle School, creating a hands-on experiences for the students bordering the park.
- Worked with the village of Riam Berasap Jaya on the southern border of the park to form the first village board to sustainably manage a customary forest in the Ketapang and Kayong Utara region. Over a dozen villages in the area are now working with GPOCP and our allies to protect their own customary forests.
- Reached over 45% more students and schools than in 2009 with an expanded education staff.
- Encouraged the village of Pampang Harapan to end encroachment into the national park through knowledge sharing of sustainable agriculture techniques and forming a bamboo furniture cooperative, RBL, and to provide environmentally friendly income alternatives.
- Established two conservation youth groups; TJAM in Ketapang and REBONK in Kayong Utara. The groups have begun conducting their own environmental education activities.
Animal and Habitat Protection
- Organized the first successful trial and conviction of wild orangutan dealers in Indonesia, setting a precedent for increased enforcement of wildlife protections in West Kalimantan and beyond.
- Conducted 92 days of field investigations in sixteen sub-districts, leading to the consifscation of nine illegally held orangutans and one Malay sunbear.
- Worked with local partners to form the West Kalimantan Orangutan Forum, bringing together civil society, government and the private sector to support implementation of the Orangutan Action Plan in the province of West Kalimantan.
- This was the first full year of orangutan research at Cabang Panti Research Station in Gunung Palung National Park since illegal logging forced its closure in 2003.
- Played a critical role in providing logistical support (e.g., transportation, housing, data entry, equipment purchases, communications, sponsorships, etc.) for the 2009 orangutan research team.
