Conservation Awareness
To educate adults about orangutan and habitat conservation issues, GPOCP distributes information through mass media. We host a weekly radio show that engages citizens on a variety of local issues (e.g., pest outbreaks related to deforestation, oil palm development, forest fires) through interactive talk shows, special guest presentations, and informative dissemination. This program is estimated to reach around 200,000 listeners around the national park. GPOCP also produces a quarterly newsletter (Media Informasi Pencinta Satwa (MIaS), which translates to "Information for Animal Lovers") focusing on a variety of conservation issues. GPOCP posts billboards, posters, and other signage to deal with specific problems. For example, we posted banners describing safe ways to drive orangutans away from crops and then followed up with village discussions in six key conflict zones. We also regularly host a mobile cinema which shows conservation-themed films (including one GPOCP produced about its community forest initiative) and is followed by community discussions. GPOCP sponsors numerous special events, such as "Gunung Palung Speaks Out", which seeks to increase community involvement in the national park and its protection. Through these activities, we give villagers access to information about their environment that would have otherwise been unavailable to them.
